Baker Tilly Vancouver serves Vancouver’s bustling mining and exploration sector with audit and financial reporting services, as well as keen local knowledge.
British Columbia’s mining industry is one of a kind. It supports more than 35,000 jobs and 3,700 small, medium and Indigenous businesses in every corner of the province with nearly $3 billion in annual expenditures on goods and services.
Just over 1,200 mining and exploration businesses are headquartered in Vancouver, employing around 10,000 people. Most of these operations start private, but being capital intensive quickly turn public—and this is where the public company (“Pubco”) group at Baker Tilly Vancouver makes its mark.
“Mining and Exploration is one of the largest public company markets in Vancouver,” says Doris Cen, partner, audit and accounting, with Baker Tilly Vancouver. “As that market has grown, so has our expertise in understanding the intricacies of these businesses and our ability to help them in several areas.”
Baker Tilly Vancouver’s Pubco group specializes in audits for both public and private companies, but it is so much more, especially since its experts know the Vancouver market. They can also assist companies in the transition from private to public, consult on financial reporting and assist in ensuring companies complete their due diligence.
“Public companies are required to complete an annual audit, and we have done so many that we can help ensure all deadlines and reporting requirements are met,” Cen says. “Going public can also be a bit of a process. We help company owners understand the steps and complete them efficiently.”
Cen joined Baker Tilly Vancouver as a Principal at the end of 2023 and was made Partner on January 1, 2024. Delving into Baker Tilly Vancouver’s Pubco group, she quickly learned that in the past decade, mining has seen remarkable growth in Vancouver. At the same time, Baker Tilly Vancouver’s Pubco group grew to have six partners offering services to meet growing and changing demand.
For example, Baker Tilly Vancouver has client companies based in Vancouver but running operations in the exploration stages in multiple districts, including Mexico and South America. “We have the ability to help and support companies in various jurisdictions with auditing and assurance services.”
Baker Tilly Vancouver’s Pubco group is proud of its record and the quality of its work in Vancouver’s mining and exploration sector. “We pride ourselves on our audit quality and on the level of service we provide our clients,” Cen says. “We spend the time getting to know each client’s unique needs, and we check in regularly, so our clients can file their audited financial statements on time and get sound advice on public company financial reporting requirements.
“Audit quality is important, and we want to make sure our clients are protected.”
