Sierra Wireless announced Monday that it has acquired Vancouver-based In Motion Technology Inc., a developer of rugged and secure mobile routers for vehicles. In Motion’s on-board system is used by ambulance services, law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services across the U.S. and Canada. Over the course of 2013, In Motion generated US $15 million in revenue, and its gross margin was 50 per cent of revenue. The acquisition will allow Sierra, which designs and manufactures wireless communications systems, to, “expand [its] market share in high growth, high value markets such as public safety and commercial fleets,” according to president and CEO Jason Cohenour. Based in Richmond, Sierra Wireless is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker SWIR; it was up at US $21.30 at the time of publication. The transaction is expected to close in early March.
