Hint: One of them is from B.C.
There‘s no shortage of household names on Time‘s unranked list of the 100 most influential companies in the world.
Apple, Nike, Twitter, Netflix, the NBA. The list goes on and on, and it‘s more or less a who’s who of massive brands with widespread recognition. But Canadians will only be able to identify two homegrown businesses that cracked the intimidating catalogue.
One, unsurprisingly, is Ottawa-based Shopify, the proprietary e-commerce platform that helps entrepreneurs big and small hawk their products.
The other is Nanaimo cannabis producer Tilray. If you’re shocked to see that locally headquartered business join a list featuring Reese Witherspoon, its appearance makes a lot of sense.
Time clearly wanted to include a cannabis player, and with its roughly US$3.3-billion market cap, Tilray is one of the stock market’s bigger names in the industry. Plus, its recent merger with Ontario-based Aphria will reportedly create the world’s largest pot firm by revenue.
Now the pressure is on for Time‘s annual Most Influential People list. Last year, only one Canadian (the Weeknd) made the cut.
