Central City Brewers + Distillers president Darryll Frost gives insight into his love for family, work and his Cadillac CTS-V
Darryll Frost was born in Andover, Hampshire, U.K., attended John Hanson Secondary School, and then continued on to study at Cricklade College. Frost spent time working at Cumberland Hotel in London, and in 1982, he immigrated to Canada.
He became president of Central City Brewing and Distillery in January 2002 and since then has taken the company to new heights. As much as Frost loves his work, nothing matches the passion he has for family—he and his wife, Lee, are parents to five wonderful children. Despite his busy schedule, Frost believes that life is short so he does his best to fit in as much as possible into his days, which often includes philanthropic work in the area of autism.
Whats your favourite car?I love my Cadillac CTS-V, 643HP. It’s completely understated and has everything I’ve ever dreamed of in a car. Why do you choose Dueck as your preferred dealership? They really value their customers, and have always cared about my time, my preferences and never fail to make sure every detail is covered—I can’t ask for more than that. What was your first job?I was a dishwasher, which I hated and never want to do again. What was the turning point in your career? It was speaking to Diane Watts (mayor of Surrey, 2004 to 2015). She helped put Central City Brewing and Distillery on the map. What motivates you?The fear of failure and the dislike of dishwashing. What excites you the most about the future of your industry?I’m in the craft spirits and beer business! A renaissance is in full swing on the beer side and has just begun on the spirits side—definitely a wonderful time to be in this business.
How do you like to spend your time away from the office?Family is important to me, so trying to create memories with them is how I like to spend that time. If time wasn’t a consideration what would be your ideal road trip?I would head north, and go all the way. I can’t believe I’ve seen so little of our province. I do very much hope to remedy that in the future. What are three components you need for any road trip you take?My credit card (the car’s a V8 after all), my cell phone and Lee, my beautiful wife. What’s your favourite quote and why? It’s a quote by William James: “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” What’s your mantra/motto?Never give up. Never think there’s a choice. Where are your three favourite spots to eat in the city? The first is Central City brew pub on Beatty Street. It has fresh beers, and I love the room and vibe. The second spot is Le Crocodile because it always has beautiful food. The last place is the award-winning Tojo’s. What music can be heard playing from your radio while you’re driving?I love Motown, 80’s music, rock and pop tunes. One artist I really like is Andrea Bocelli. My musical taste is quite eclectic and all over the map.
