Wanting to better understand how people feel when they see a Cirque du Soleil live performance, Cirque du Soleil partnered with renowned creative neuroscience group Lab of Misfits to conduct an ambitious study of awe. The study took place during 10 different performances of Cirque’s “O” in Las Vegas, with a total of 280 audience members. The participants wore state-of-the-art EEG “brain caps” during the performances, allowing researchers to record their neural responses to 23 “awe moments” during the show.

One of the most interesting findings of this study: moments of awe can create bonding experiences. In fact, awe “pulls show-goers into a shared experience that make audience members feel more emotionally connected to the people around them, turning the performances into a form of spectacular group hug,” the researchers found. Participants also showed evidence of a disruption in their usual thought patterns, more open-mindedness to group decision-making, a greater willingness to take risks and an increased perception of wonder.
