At the recent World Cup of soccer, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovi? offered a graceful clinic in leadership in good times and bad. When things were going well—as they did for her plucky country of 4 million for most of the tournament—she was an enthusiastic supporter, without ever trying to upstage the team’s exploits. Upon defeat at the hands (or feet) of heavily favoured France in the final, she really showed her colours, eschewing an umbrella and standing in the rain to shake the hands of each and every member of both teams.
