A sold-out crowd of 3,500 diners, dressed head-to-toe in white, took to Yaletown’s waterfront for the third annual Dîner en Blanc. The location—David Lam Park—was kept a secret until an hour before the event began. Guests were required to wear white, bring their own tables and chairs, and had the option to either bring their own epicurean meals or pre-order meals from chef David Hawksworth.
Groups met in designated spots around the city and were transported by buses to the location. The evening began with live music and a ceremonial waving of the napkins to begin dinner service. Performance artists from Arts Umbrella entertained the crowd and guests were treated to a live performance of “Seguidilla” from the opera Carmen, courtesy of the Vancouver Opera. The evening concluded with sparklers and an optional after-party at another location.
Dîner en Blanc was hosted by The Social Concierge, a Vancouver-based marketing agency that also holds the licence to Dîner en Blanc Victoria, Calgary and Edmonton. What began as a “friends and word-of-mouth only” event in Paris, France, has grown into an international phenomenon on five continents. Diners continue to gather at a secret location for the sole purpose of sharing a high-quality meal with good friends in one of their city’s most beautiful locations.
