Should we be surprised that tech companies led the cavalry?
Glassdoor just released its eighth annual ranking of the best places to work in Canada in 2023, and a Vancouver company not only made it onto the list for the first time, but rounded out the top three.
The recruiting site relies on anonymous employee feedback to assemble the list, which recognizes businesses with 1,000 or more employees. Some new industries came out to play this time, including insurance, manufacturing, business services and aerospace and defence. But, like last year, tech companies dominated the rankings in Canada, occupying eight positions in total.
Google climbed four rungs to snag the title of the No. 1 employer to work for this year, followed closely by pharmaceutical company Roche at No.2.
Vancouver-based QuadReal, with assets totalling $67.1 billion, landed at No.3. According to an (anonymous) assistant property manager, the real estate company boasts “outstanding quality of people,” “no toxicity” as well as “strong and noble values.” Although it’s the only B.C.-based business being featured this year, most of the other 25 companies have some sort of presence in the province. Other first-timers on the list include Quebec City-based iA Financial Group (No.5) and Toronto-based Mackenzie Investments (No.11).
As the only company to consistently make the Canadian ranking every year, Apple clocked in at No. 17, even though employees knocked the tech giant off the U.S. list for the first time.
Should we be surprised that tech companies led the cavalry? Maybe, given how rocky the industry has been—practically every major company underwent massive layoffs. But that just shows how attractive and enduring the sector is for employees, and Canada seems no different.
