One of Metro Vancouver’s longest-serving mayors is refusing to give up in the fight against the Kinder Morgan pipeline extension.

Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan, who has said he will run for a sixth consecutive term, intends to ask the Supreme Court of Canada to hear its challenge of a National Energy Board (NEB) decision that came down in December.

That NEB ruling said that the energy infrastructure company isn’t required to comply with two sections of Burnaby’s bylaws on land and tree clearances as it expands the pipeline, which will triple the amount of diluted bitumen and other oil products moving between the Edmonton area and port facilities in Burnaby.

Initial construction of the extension will take place on Burnaby Mountain. However, protests have made it difficult for construction crews to start work.
