BCBusiness Innovators 2012, SendtoNews Video Inc | BCBusinessBack: 2012 BCBusiness Guide to Innovation
Congratulations to SendtoNews Video Inc., #4 in 2012's Most Innovative Companies in B.C. Remember that viral video of the head coach of the Abbotsford Heat hockey team throwing a hockey-stick-smashing, shirt-tearing tantrum on the bench? So do 150 million other sports fans. But that outburst never would have seen the light of day if it hadn’t been for SendtoNews, the Victoria-based company that is changing the way newsrooms connect with content.
Founded by a team of experienced media and marketing specialists, SendtoNews provides a link between content providers and newsrooms that otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to cover everything that’s happening in any given area. CEO Greg Bobolo describes the concept as a “high-end YouTube for news organizations.” Content creators upload high-quality videos, images and written articles, while news publishers browse through the submissions and download stories from around the world, creating instantaneous hyper-local coverage on a global scale.
Like the hockey coach’s outburst, the company has quickly become an international phenomenon thanks to a host of high-profile users, including Global BC TV sportscaster Squire Barnes, the RCMP, Rugby Canada and B.C. Premier Christy Clark during her recent trade mission to China. After being relied on by more than 1,400 reporters worldwide during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, SendtoNews has now entered into discussions to become the official platform for news distribution for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
