Shaw ‘Outage’ Deletes Customer Emails

The communications company is on the defensive this week after thousands of customer emails were deleted in an ‘isolated incident’

Shaw Communications customers are not in a happy place this week.

Late last week, a technical problem deleted the incoming emails for thousands of Shaw subscribers.

And unfortunately, while Shaw was able to recover some details of the emails such as the sender and the time sent, the content of the emails was lost. Shaw kept its customers updated on its community portal and sent the affected users emails later the same day with a list of all the emails that were deleted during the outage.

Apparently the service disruption was caused after technicians were attempting to fix an email delay on Thursday morning.

The disruption lasted 12 hours over last Thursday and affected around 70 per cent of Shaw’s Internet customers across the country. However, people in B.C. and Alberta seem to have been disproportionately affected because most of Shaw’s 1.9 million users live in Western Canada.

Although the Vancouver Sun is reporting that the incident was isolated and won’t likely happen again, such a widespread and lengthy outage certainly has customers frustrated.
