How did you get the idea to make such a unique but timely film? I heard about a program sponsored by Telus called Story Hive in which the company funds local storytellers to create local narratives. Getting funding depended on getting votes for your idea via social media. I had just finished a BCIT social media marketing course and I thought this was a good way to apply what I learned.
But why not pipelines or komodo bears? Why beer? I just went out for a pint with some friends and we were throwing around ideas. At the end of our drink I just looked down in my glass and the answer hit me.
What have you learned after making the film? That as fast as everyone thinks the B.C. craft brew industry is growing, it’s growing even faster. Since I finished the documentary, six more breweries have opened.
Are we in a craft beer bubble? I think we can still absorb growth. Vancouver’s percentage of craft beer consumption is still at 20%, compared to Seattle’s 30% and Portland’s 40%. You still have local British Columbians who have never had craft beer discovering it and that will only fuel demand.
