Building at 1133 Melville may ease city’s office space crunch

There are a few projects in development that aim to ease the pressure of Vancouver’s current office space crunch. None will be taller than Oxford Properties’ newly announced tower.

The Stack, the company’s building at 1133 Melville Street, will bring 540,000 square feet of office space to Vancouver’s downtown core. Demolition is under way on the current site (a multi-storey parkade), and construction is slated to start next year. If all goes according to plan, the building (and its twisting box design which is slated to go up more than 106 metres in the air) will be finished in early 2022.

It comes at a time when the city is suffering an office space squeeze. Downtown Vancouver had a 4.7-percent vacancy rate in the second quarter, the second-lowest of any major market in North America, according to Toronto-based Oxford.

Designed by local architect James Cheng, the project will attempt to incorporate wellness and community into the design of the building, which will have six outdoor decks, a public park and a rooftop patio.
