“Rain City Chronicles has produced events with the Vancouver School Board and the Vancouver Art Gallery and has been broadcast on CBC Radio”

The Story: Lizzy Karp credits her outsider status in helping her become an “accidental” entrepreneur. Born in Salt Lake City to an American father and Canadian mother, Karp defected north during the George W. Bush years, studying English at the University of Toronto. She moved to Vancouver in 2009, where she took a public relations program at Langara and immediately became a mainstay in the city’s cultural scene with her launch of the popular storytelling event Rain City Chronicles. After approaching the Waldorf Hotel as a potential venue for Rain City, the former operators of the east side institution hired her as their marketing and cultural programmer. That led to a job with ad agency Village & Co., and in 2012 she went solo with her own marketing and communications company; her event firm, Here There, was established in 2014 when she met her business partner Ken Tsui, who reinvented Vancouver’s Chinatown Night Market.

Markers of Success: Communications clients include Vancouver Coastal Health, Salt Spring Island Coffee and Young Agrarians. Rain City Chronicles has produced events with the Vancouver School Board and the Vancouver Art Gallery and has been broadcast on CBC Radio. —Jessica Barrett
