What’s your top goal for 2010?
To meet the demand for services through better-quality care. There’s a fair bit of evidence that better care equals less-costly care.

How will the Olympics impact your organization now and in the years to come?
GE will be giving us diagnostic equipment to be used during the Olympics. There’s also the very new and innovative mobile medical unit we will have as a legacy project, providing operating room capacity in cases of disasters. Some Americans have been dissing our health-care system recently, but I think those who need to avail themselves of our services will see that they’re actually pretty good.

What keeps you up at night?
We have a number of buildings that are in very serious disrepair. We recognize that there are areas in the province that are growing more rapidly and need capital investment, but the renewal of our older facilities is a really, really big issue for us. And frankly, I don’t see that capital being available.
